UNWANTED and unroadworthy vehicles are being targeted by Stockton Borough Council.
The authority is offering to collect redundant vehicles for free until the end of October, when new legislation will see motorists charged £140.
The council has access to the DVLA's records of ownership, and if abandoned cars are found then owners can be traced and prosecuted, with a maximum penalty of £2,500.
Graeme Small, enforcement officer for Stockton Council, said: "Abandoned vehicles are not only a hazard to the environment, but are unsightly and this is something that will definitely incur costs to those who choose to break the law.
"We are calling for people to contact us and we will gladly collect the vehicles free of charge until the end of October."
To report an abandoned vehicle, call (01642) 528036.
