IF recent events are anything to go by Matt Clarke and Darlington were just meant to be.
Clarke seemed destined to leave during the summer when relegated Notts County came calling with a "substantial" offer for his services.
So definite was Clarke's switch to Meadow Lane that manager David Hodgson had already lined up a replacement in the shape of released Barnsley defender Craig Ireland.
But when County boss Gary Mills pulled out at the last minute and signed Rob Ullathorne instead, Clarke unexpectedly returned to pre-season training with Quakers.
And, after starting the season as an emergency striker, Clarke's future again came into question when Bradford City registered their interest in the Leeds-born defender.
But a serious knee injury to Joey Hutchinson at Rochdale over a fortnight ago has once again thrown Clarke's future up in the air.
However, the 23-year-old - who started his career at Wolves - has set his immediate sights on filling the void left by Hutchinson, despite Hodgson confirming his interest in Ipswich defender Chris Hogg last week.
"I'm not really too concerned about the move because I feel more sorry for Joey more than anything," said Clarke.
"I've got a contract until the end of the season and unless I am told otherwise I am committed to the club.
"Joey has been playing so well and I'm sure he will be a massive loss.
"We're all hoping Joey will be back sooner rather than later because he's an important member of the team."
Clarke's versatility has proved a useful commodity for Hodgson. And when striker Alun Armstrong limped off with severe blisters in the 81st minute, Clarke switched from defensive to attacking duties.
Armstrong will not play in tomorrow night's LDV Vans Trophy clash at Mansfield Town, but will return to face Southend on Saturday.
And Clarke believes the recent acquisitions of Armstrong and Craig Hignett can only help Quakers up the League Two table.
"You can tell Alun is a class act even on the training pitch," said Clarke. "He's played at the highest level and you can see that in the little things he does.
"Hopefully with him and Craig Hignett will back soon we will do very well."
Clarke felt aggrieved not to have left the Moss Rose Ground with at least a point at the weekend.
He said: "After last week I think it was a big improvement. We dominated the first half an hour but I think they finished stronger after a couple of decisions went against us.
"I think Ryan (Valentine) will be the first to admit that he didn't keep with his runner at the back post when they got the goal.
"We are all disappointed not to have come away with at least a draw."
