THE story of how a North-East soldier won the only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day will be retold this weekend.
Expert Nigel de Lee, who lecturers at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, will give a talk at the DLI Museum in Durham City on Saturday.
He will recount the part played in the Normandy landings by the 50th Northumbrian Division and the Durham Light Infantry.
Both were involved in heavy fighting on D-Day around Gold Beach.
The first ashore were the 50th Division, which landed at 7.30am under heavy fire, but eventually overwhelmed the German coastal defences during a battle in which Middlesbrough-born Stan Hollis was awarded the military's highest honour.
By mid-morning, the Northumbrians had been followed by three battalions of the DLI which fought its way inland towards Bayeux.
Mr de Lee, who has worked for the Imperial War Museum, is making his first appearance at the DLI, with the talk from 2pm.
Tickets are £4, with concessions available.
