A MIDDLESBROUGH student has benefited from the chance to "earn as you learn" after he was accepted by Cambridge University.
Aleem Iqbal, 18, of Ayresome received a £30-a-week education maintenance allowance, which enabled him to study towards the four A grade A-levels that secured him a place at Cambridge to read History.
The cash made it possible for him to pay for books, stationery and cover travel expenses during his two years at MacMillan College, working towards A-levels in government and politics, history, English literature and sociology.
Cambridge University has also awarded Aleem a bursary.
He received the weekly allowance as part of the Learning and Skills Council Tees Valley's Education maintenance allowance pilot, which is now available across the Tees Valley.
He said: "Everyone at MacMillan College was so supportive during my A-levels and I hope to represent them and Middlesbrough well at university."
