POLICE are encouraging 16-year-olds to get behind the wheel of a car as part of a safe driving initiative.
Only 20 places are left on the Megadrive course, designed to give young people a background knowledge of driving before they take to the road.
About 240 youngsters will be able to take part in the four-day event, and organisers hope to attract teenage girls as well as boys, along with teenagers with special needs.
They will learn about vehicle ownership, the pitfalls to avoid when buying a car, as well as advice on car insurance, hazard perception and vehicle maintenance.
PC Paul McCabe, who is helping to organise the event, set up by Langbaurgh Police and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's road safety department, said: "This scheme sets out to highlight both the pitfalls and pleasure of owning and driving a car.
"Last year proved a great success with more than 200 youngsters taking part and we are hoping for the same again this year."
Prizes will be up for grabs at the event, with the overall winner receiving nine driving lessons and theory books.
It costs £4 to take part. Anyone interested can contact PC McCabe on (01642) 302068 before October 8.
