THE granddaughter of Peter Lee, the man who gave his name to an east Durham town, was guest of honour yesterday at a book launch.
Win Colman travelled to the region for the launch of a book about the 50-year history of Peterlee.
Memories of Peterlee contains more than 50 photographs illustrating the growth of the town, its industry and its people.
Published by County Durham Books, the publishing arm of Durham County Council, it shows how Peterlee evolved from nothing into a flourishing newtown.
In the book's introduction Ms Colman says: "Like the man after who it was named, Peterlee had small beginnings but over the years has grown and developed.
"The town has seen many changes and has gone from strength to strength to become, as it is today, a town to be proud of, with good housing and schools, a college and leisure facilities."
The photographs show the town being built, the first group of christenings at St Cuthbert's Church and a royal visit in 1960, as well as views of social pastimes such as whippet racing.
Memories of Peterlee costs £2.95.
