TANNI Grey-Thompson, who has become Britain's most successful Paralympian, is to be offered the Freedom of the Borough.
The wheelchair athlete, from Redcar, east Cleveland, who was born with spina bifida, will be offered the award by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council chiefs on her return from Athens, where she won two gold medals.
The award for Tanni, 35, who lives in Redcar with husband, Ian, and daughter, Carys, is in recognition of her sporting achievements and the contribution she makes to the local community.
Tanni became Britain's top paralympic athlete on Monday, winning gold in the T53m 400m final in a record time, 57.36 seconds, to collect her 11th gold paralympic medal.
Councillor Vera Moody, the council coalition's Conservative group leader, said: "We hope Tanni will feel that the Freedom of the Borough is a special honour that recognises what a superb role model she has been across all sectors of our community.
"She'll certainly be in good company - Mo Mowlam, the former Redcar MP, and the town's historian Vera Robinson MBE, have also enjoyed the honour.
