WITH so many classy fillies lined up for this afternoon's Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, the outcome will doubtless have an effect on the state of the ante-post market for next year's 1,000 Guineas.
Only two of the seven runners defend unbeaten records, with pride of place going to Damson, who numbers a silky-smooth success in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot among her four career victories to date.
Kieren Fallon's mount is spectacularly fast, but not far behind, and arguably with more scope to get even better, is Suez, triumphant on her Glorious Goodwood debut, a win she followed up in scintillating style by running away with a Listed contest at Salisbury.
In selecting Suez (2.25) there is without question a certain amount of guesswork involved because her overall composite level of form is nowhere near as good as Damson. On the other hand, there is in all probability a good deal more to come from the Michael Jarvis-trained juvenile, therefore she just gets the nod in what promises to be a mouthwatering clash.
Although there's not quite so much quality in evidence for the Group 3 colts and geldings seven-furlong Cheveley Park Stakes, Diktatorial (3.00) looks one to keep on the right side of, having hacked up at Sandown last time out.
Despite swerving violently left-handed about a quarter-of-a-mile from home, Diktatorial still won by five lengths with a ton in hand. Andrew Balding's representative is clearly a bit of a monkey who needs to iron out one or two flaws. However, on balance, his quirky nature is always likely to be counteracted by an abundance of natural ability.
Kevin Ryan is enjoying his best ever season, due in no small part to the speedy two-year-old Coleorton Dancer (3.30), poised to complete a magnificent five-timer in the £20,000 NGK Spark Plugs Nursery.
Ryan's progressive youngster has improved out of all recognition over the past few weeks, his latest success coming over course and distance when beating a decent field in a similarly competitive event.
Goodwood's card centres round an excellent contest for the Group 3 Citigroup Stakes, a closely-matched affair featuring a whole host of seven-furlong specialists.
Backers of the occasionally irresolute Suggestive had their fingers burnt big-time when he failed to land a major gamble at Newbury last time, and he's not a horse I would care to have my life savings on.
On the flip side of the coin they don't come much braver than Court Masterpiece (3.40).
For the nap we rely on Enford Princess (2.35), a filly seemingly beginning to find her form judged on a staying on fourth at Sandown 15 days ago. Enford Princess could have gone very close that day but found unwanted traffic problems just as jockey Ryan Moore was set to make his challenge.
