A CONTROVERSIAL care home for elderly people will open next month.
Charles Dickens Lodge, in Barnard Castle, is the final home of six extraCare schemes being built across County Durham.
The home has been built on the site of the Stoneleigh residential home and residents protested about being moved out while work went ahead.
Residents move into the new building on October 11. Each flat has its own kitchen and bathroom and there is a communal lounge, shop and hairdresser. Care services are provided by Durham County Council and Hanover Housing Association looks after the building and support services.
Vera Brearey, of the housing association, said: "This level of care is flexible and can be adapted to meet any changes in the care required without the need for a resident to necessarily move."
