SEDGEFIELD Borough Council's countryside team has been awarded £14,000 to improve footpaths around Ferryhill Carrs nature reserve.
The council is adding a further £4,000 to the grant from the Countryside Agency's Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.
A public footpath opposite Wood Lane will be surfaced and will continue to the bottom of the reserve.
Countryside officer Louise Harrington said: "We hope that improving the footpath will attract more visitors to the site and help people to enjoy their natural surroundings"
Work should start before the end of the year and will mean some temporary footpath closures.
