DISABILITY minister Maria Eagle last night warned businesses in the region they could face large fines if they are not prepared for new laws on disabled people's rights introduced today.
The Government said it wanted to avoid a showdown over the legislation, which means businesses must ensure they provide equal access for disabled people.
But Mrs Eagle said the Government was ready to take action against businesses flouting the new laws.
She told The Northern Echo: "We are prepared for court cases if that is needed, though I hope most people listen to good sense.
"But the law is changing for a reason. Disabled people are being discriminated against and I certainly approve of extremely bad examples being prosecuted."
Businesses prosecuted under the new Disability Discrimination Act will face fines ranging from £3,500 up to nearly £170,000
