AN ATTEMPT to burgle a house caused nearly £3,000 of damage before the culprit escaped with a screwdriver worth just £5.
The thief picked up the screwdriver outside a house in Keighly Avenue, Middlesbrough, and damaged the patio at the rear of the property.
He failed to get in but tried his luck at the front door, where he caused even more damage.
He went on to break a downstairs window but was disturbed when the house owner drove into a driveway. The would-be intruder ran off towards the Easterside area of Middlesbrough.
The burglar was about 5ft 6in, aged between 35 and 40 and had dark brown hair. He was thin and scruffy.
