CONSTRUCTION workers joined staff at the North-East's largest shopping centre yesterday to witness the blessing of a new mall.
The Reverend June Robson, Gateshead MetroCentre's chaplain, conducted the service at the entrance of the centre's new Red Mall in advance of the official opening on Wednesday.
The Rev Robson said: "We see many examples in the Gospels of Jesus blessing people and objects.
"We decided it would be good to ask all those people who have been involved in the building of the mall to join together during the blessing."
There are 6,000 staff working at MetroCentre and the opening of the Red Mall will provide an additional 1,000 retail jobs.
