AN ancient oak tree is to be cut down before it falls. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, is said to have preached under the tree in Redmire, Wensleydale, in the 18th Century.
Historian Ann Holubecki, of Redmire, said the oak could be more than 500 years old.
"We will not know until it's cut down and somebody counts the rings," she said.
"It will be very sad to see it go. When it was younger it had lovely foliage, but in the past few years it has started to look worse and worse."
The oak has been the subject of numerous paintings by local and visiting artists.
Andrew Jordan, chairman of Redmire Parish Council, said it had needed propping up for many years.
"The council has tried to keep it as long as possible because of its historical interest and because it's a treasured part of the village," he said.
"But the last time we got a tree surgeon to look at it, five years ago, he said it wasn't safe. We tried a little remedial work, but it's now got to the stage where we have to act."
A sapling from the oak has been planted next to the old oak in memory of former parish clerk Ronnie Waters.
The council expects the tree to be felled during the winter.
