ONE of the most eye-catching works of art to go on display in the North-East is to be officially unveiled next week.
The roof of the new Debenham's store, at Gateshead's MetroCentre, is now home to a 22ft glass sculpture called Look Out, which has taken two years to make, based on a design by Newcastle artist Cate Watkinson.
The tribute to window shopping is filled with five polished stainless steel spheres each measuring more than 5ft in diameter and fitted with LED lighting and fibre optics.
Ms Watkinson said: "This has been a fantastic project to work on and is the biggest piece I have designed so far. It is really exciting to see the effect you can achieve when you use glass and light on this scale."
Look Out was commissioned by Capital Shopping Centres and has been built in the North-East by Architectural Metalworkers, which specialises in the manufacture of one-off pieces, and Tanfield Metal Spinners.
In the past 15 years, Ms Watkinson has worked on a number of high profile creations for the North-East including Steady Eddy, a decorative glass screen for Newcastle Airport Arrivals
Look Out will be officially unveiled at 7.45pm on Tuesday as part of the opening of MetroCentre's Red Mall extension.
