MOTORISTS are warned of possible delays as traffic plans are put in force for the arrival of freshers at Durham University tomorrow.

Most of the new intake of 2,700 first years are expected to arrive in Durham by car with their parents for the start of the university term.

The arrivals put pressure on city centre roads, particularly the narrow streets on the Peninsula around the colleges on North and South Bailey, near Durham Cathedral.

Access to the Market Place and Saddler Street is to be limited to 700 vehicles per hour, with arrivals to five Peninsula colleges staggered, and limited to permit holders.

On dropping off undergraduates and their luggage, vehicles will be directed to dedicated car parks in the city.

The operation involves the rare opening to traffic of Prebends Bridge, a footbridge only for the rest of the year.

A university spokesman said all students and other residents on the Peninsula have been informed of the arrangements.

PC Jeff Barksby, Durham Police's university liaison officer, said the Fresher Week arrangements helped reduce congestion in recent years
