THE name of a military policeman killed in Iraq has been added to the war memorial in his home town.
About 60 people gathered at the memorial at All Saints' Church, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, on Saturday for a dedication service.
Lance Corporal Ben Hyde, 23, was killed with five other military policemen in June last year during an ambush on a police station, where they had been training local officers.
His father, John Hyde, said: "There has only been one year since the end of the Second World War in 1945 that a British serviceman or woman has not been killed. All of those people deserve to have their names on a war memorial.
"We wanted to have his name on there in time for the last Remembrance Sunday but it just wasn't possible with all the things that needed to be done. It will certainly make Remembrance Sunday far more significant this year."
Northallerton already has a memorial seat for L Cpl Hyde and the town's cemetery, where he is buried, has a memorial stone bearing the names of all six Red Caps killed in the incident.
