FATHERS are being urged to join their sons in using a new school gym.
The £20,000 fitness suite, which opened recently at Greencroft School, in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, has proved to be a hit with male pupils.
Staff are now opening it up to parents, and are especially keen for dads to make the most of the equipment. Head teacher Chris Espiner said: "It is a community resource. We are hoping eventually to have creche facilities put in next door, so dads can bring baby and still work out."
Part-funding for the project came from the Learning and Skills Council, and the school is working with SureStart Stanley to provide the service.
The gym is also used by the youth inclusion programme, which is based in the school grounds.
