STREET children in Africa will soon be playing in football shirts thanks to the generosity of local fans.
More than 100 lucky youngsters in one of the world's poorest countries will be sent football shirts by avid Darlington FC supporter Scott Thornberry. The shirts were donated by fans at last Saturday's match against Southend United.
He was amazed to be handed 121 shirts during the afternoon. He said: "There are 96 Darlington shirts, some of which are brand new, and the others are from teams such as Newcastle United and Manchester United. They are for street kids who have nothing and I can only imagine that they will be really pleased."
Mr Thornberry, who works for Northumbrian Water, is being helped by company charity Water Aid, which has links with the continent, to send the shirts to Africa.
