DURHAM racing driver Chris Dent was back on track yesterday as the 19-year-old started his preparation for the Formula Renault UK winter series at Croft.

Dent secured a drive with Mark Burdett Racing and plans to complete up to ten days testing with the team before the winter race weekends in November.

Testing is taking place at Croft before the team moves on to Donington on Friday.

Dent secured his place after impressing Mark Burdett during testing earlier this year, and after attracting the sponsorship that's vital to securing a seat.

"I can't wait to get in the car again. I've spent the summer training in preparation for the winter series and now feel I'm in the best shape to get started," he said beforehand.

"The test days we're planning this month at technically demanding tracks are vital to get me in the best position for the winter series. We have enough sponsorship to allow me to test on new tyres which is crucial if I'm to be at the front of the grid in November."

Formula Renault UK is considered to be the most prestigious single seater championship for young drivers in Britain and spawned the likes of Formula 1 star Kimi Rikknen.

Supported by one of the world's biggest motor manufacturers, the series is broadcast to four million viewers on terrestrial and satellite television.

Prior to the main championship next year, the winter series takes place over two weekends with the opening two rounds at Pembrey Circuit in Wales on November 6 with the second and final meeting at Croft Circuit November 13.

Most of the drivers who compete in the winter series will go on to race in the 2005 championship as long as they can secure enough sponsorship.

John Dent, Chris' father and manager, said: "We have confirmed sponsorship for the winter series so now we're aiming to bring on board some partners so Chris can continue his career in the full championship."
