TWO of the region's soldiers have returned to the UK from a tour of Afghanistan after being decorated by the US.
The pair, from the Green Howards, were honoured by the US Army for their work with the Afghan National Army Training Team.
Colour Sergeant Andrew Kidger, from Guisborough, was part of the supply chain that kept both the training team and the Afghan National Army's school for junior non-commissioned officers in Kabul supplied with materials.
He has been awarded the US Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding work and service and for his contribution to the overall success of the US-led Coalition Task Force Phoenix in Afghanistan.
The citation for the award said he showed "exceptional energy, zeal and hard work", adding: "He has exemplified the role of a senior non-commissioned officer and set the highest of standards for the Afghan National Army to aspire to."
Corporal David Lightfoot, from Scarborough, was an instructor for Afghan non-commissioned officers. In fact, his tuition in the use of weapons was so highly regarded that the Afghans are now using his methods to teach others.
He was also awarded the US Army Commendation Medal.
His citation said: "'He has gained such credibility as an instructor, via an interpreter, that Afghan National Army instructors seek him out for advice."
Colour Sgt Kidger and Cpl Lightfoot are now back in the UK, at their battalion's base in Chepstow.
