The man, who has not been named, sustained a broken collarbone, head and back injuries after he was hit by up to two cars. He was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.
The A174 at Redcar, east Cleveland, where the incident took place on Tuesday morning, was closed for some time.

"We believe he was driving on the A174 on his way to east Cleveland when he was struck by a car.
"He has had a nasty accident, which could have been a lot worse."
