THATCHED pub, the Star Inn, at Harome, has been named Pub of the Year for the second year running in the Ebury Publishing Good Pub Guide, 2005.
It is also named as the guide's Dining Pub of the Year..
And another North Yorkshire pub, the Wombwell Arms at Wass, has been commended in a list of pubs which strive to use local produce, as does the Star.
The judges had this to say of the Star, run by Andrew and Jacqui Pern: "This is an exceptional place for any occasion. It's a pretty thatched fourteenth century inn, on the edge of the North York Moors, run with flair and imagination by very friendly, young licensees and their courteous and helpful, smartly-dressed staff.
"Much emphasis is placed on the first-rate food, but there's a proper pubby atmosphere in the bar."
The pub uses fish delivered daily from Hartlepool, local hen, duck and guinea fowl eggs, three types of honey from the village, and its own herbs and vegetables. There are lots of British cheeses too.
In the "pub goes local" section, the Wombwell Arms is included for its use of only fresh produce from local suppliers and producers.
