TWO Spanish GPs have been so impressed with the people of Teesside that they have decided to stay for at least another two years.
Irene Redolat and Chelo Fernandez came on a fact-finding visit to Teesside earlier this summer and were so impressed by the area that they have now started a two-year stint.
Recently married Chelo, 29, from Madrid, whose husband has a placement at the University of Teesside, says her family and friends are envious of her adventure. She said one of the reasons for coming to England was the possibility of more permanent work.
"In Spain, newly-qualified GPs find it hard to get permanent jobs - most have to rely on locum work," she said.
Like-minded Irene, 32, from Barcelona, said she was initially offered work in Liverpool, but wanted to work outside a large city.
Dr John Doherty, executive chair of Langbaurgh Primary Care Trust, said: "We are delighted that Irene and Chelo were so impressed with the area on their last visit here that they have decided to come and work with us.
"I'm sure they will enjoy working here and I believe we can make their stay here not only a progressive step on their career paths, but also something they will look back at in years to come and remember with affection."
