A FOOTBALL team of tradesmen fed up with their cramped changing rooms are planning to build themselves new facilities.
For years, players at Pelton Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes FC have had to put up with a small shack and showers that only work occasionally.
Rather than wait for outside help, they aim to combine their skills to build a new structure at their ground in High Handenhold, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.
Club secretary John Blythe said: "It is literally a case of Do It Yourself.
"We sat down and realised one day that we have all the necessary skills in the club to do the job ourselves. All we need is the money for the materials."
Club chairman Graham Atkin, a bricklayer, will supervise the construction.
The interior will be looked after by centre half Alan Forsyth, a carpenter, and manager Robert Richardson, a painter and decorator.
"It is a real team effort," said Mr Blythe.
"All the lads are committed and prepared to put in the effort, even if it is just labour."
The club, which was founded in 1987, plays in the premier division of Durham and District League.
Chester-le-Street District Council was forced to take down the old brick building several years ago, after asbestos was discovered inside, and it was replaced with a portable cabin.
"The main problem is the size - it is far too small," said Mr Blythe. "There is hardly any lagging on the water pipes and they tend to freeze up in winter.
"The council has been very supportive. We understand they haven't got the funds to give us a new building, so we decided to help ourselves."
The club, which is also applying for charity status, is due to take over the lease for the pitch on April 1, next year.
Organisers are hoping to emulate the success of the bowls club in nearby Pelton Fell, where members built their own pavilion.
They need to raise £15,000 and have already received several thousand pounds from a benefactor, who asked to remain anonymous.
They have arranged a dinner in Chilton Moor Country Club, in Fencehouses, on November 5.
The after dinner speaker will be ex-Sunderland and England player, Frank Worthington.
Tickets are £25 and only a few places are left. For details, contact Mr Blythe on 0191-388 0778.
