A CHEF has claimed first prize in the Great Yorkshire Cookery Competition.
Nigel Robinson, a freelance chef in the Harrogate area, won the professional section of the competition, which took place at Harvey Nichols Restaurant, in Leeds.
Mr Robinson won the competition with a recipe for Black Sheep Ale Braised Bison Ribs with root vegetable lasagne.
He used meat from Langthorne's farm, near Northallerton, and also the farm's gouda-style buffalo cheese and milk in the lasagne.
He said: "Bison is rather like beef but it is a little darker in colour and more robust in flavour. It's lower in cholesterol and the fat content is less."
Mr Robinson won £250, a plaque and will also re-create his dish at the Countryside Live Food and Farming Fair at the Great Yorkshire Showground on October 30 and 31.
The competition was launched by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and Yorkshire Life magazine.
The amateur section was won Nikki Shepherd, from Tadcaster, with a recipe for Savoury Yorkshire Ring with Tomato and Onion Jam.
