TONY Blair and an award winner from Darlington are encouraging others to nominate young achievers for this year's Celebration of Learning Awards.

Nicholas Barrett, from Darlington, won the construction achiever award for his outstanding ability and dedication to joinery and construction last year.

Despite making personal sacrifices in order to fund his training, Nicholas has remained committed to his work.

Mr Blair said: "The young people who were recognised at last year's Celebration of Learning Awards had done the most magnificent work in order to achieve their awards, and what they are also doing is building a strong economy for the future. Here in an area where we have had to undergo massive economic and industrial change."

The Celebration of Learning Awards 2004 gives people aged 13 to 24 the opportunity to win £1,000 in 14 different award categories including the arts, business, construction and health and care.

Two runners-up prizes of £250 are also available.

The awards, now in their second year, are being jointly organised by the Learning and Skills Council Tees Valley, Connexions Tees Valley and Jobcentre Plus.

Nicholas is working for Tom Willoughby's Joinery in Northallerton and he is working to become a manager.

He said: "The Celebration of Learning awards was a fantastic experience for me as I have worked extremely hard and winning this award gave me recognition for that.

"The prize money has really helped me in my career.

"I would definitely encourage others to get their nomination forms in."
