TEENAGE Olympic sensation Amir Khan has sent a goodwill message to young boxers taking part in a showpiece tournament in the region this weekend.
The 17-year-old, who captured the hearts of sports fans around the world on his way to winning a silver medal in Athens, has paid tribute to the coaching and support he received as a young boys' club member.
In a message to the Durham County Association of Clubs for Young People, who are staging the contest in Spennymoor Leisure Centre on Saturday, he said: "The boys' clubs have provided the chance for me and countless others to take up their chosen sport and then go on and compete at the highest levels.
"To all those taking part in this weekend's boxing tournament I offer my very best wishes."
Amir, from Bolton, Lancashire, was National Association of Clubs for Young people champion in 2002 and on Saturday, 72 young hopefuls from clubs across the North-East will take the first steps towards the same crown.
Retired police sergeant Alan Watson, the association's field officer in the region, said: "We know that Amir is aware the finals are taking place and are delighted that he has taken the time to send us a message."
Doors open on Saturday at 12.15pm with contests, featuring boxers aged from 15 to 19, due to start at 1pm.
Admission costs £6. For tickets telephone the association on 0191-383 1898, or Mr Watson on 07788 583013.
