MIDDLESBROUGH will move for Bolton Wanderers' goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen if Mark Schwarzer fails to sign a new deal before the transfer window re-opens in January.
Schwarzer was offered a new contract last summer but it remains unsigned after negotiations between club and keeper broke down.
The 32-year-old will become a free agent next May and Boro will be powerless to prevent him from talking to other clubs in January.
Steve McClaren has identified the Bolton keeper as the man to replace Schwarzer after fresh speculation at the weekend linking the Aussie with a move to Manchester United.
Jaaskelainen, who joined Wanderers from Finnish side VPS Vaasa seven years ago, could be persuaded to move to the Riverside by the lure of European football, but it is likely any deal would be blocked by Bolton boss Sam Allardyce.
The speculation over his future hasn't affected Schwarzer's form this term. The Australian was in goal in the SocceRoos' resounding 5-1 victory over the Soloman Islands at the weekend in the OFC Nations Cup and he revealed he is aware of reports linking him with a move to the Red Devils.
He said: "When you have eight months to go on your contract it is always going to lead to speculation.
"It's flattering but, to be honest, I'm not sure what is going to happen."
Meanwhile, Boro have announced they will not appeal against UEFA's decision to fine the club 6,500 Euros for their fans' 'improper conduct' in the European tie away to Banik Ostrava. Banik were fined 26,000 Euros.
Home fans threw missiles from the stands and set off a pyrotechnic device after earlier clashing with travelling Boro supporters before the game.
Czech fans also directed racial abuse towards some Boro fans, for which Banik were also condemned.
They were found guilty of failing to take sufficient security and segregation measures, while the Teessiders were fined only for the improper conduct of their supporters.
