MORE than 120 homes will be built on the site of a former council estate, as part of plans to regenerate a former pit village.
Taylor Woodrow Developments will construct 127 houses on land at Ewehurst Road, Flint Hill, near Stanley.
Derwentside District Council's development control committee granted planning permission at a meeting last Thursday.
The committee heard that the Environment Agency had no flooding concerns regarding the development.
Last year, the council voted to demolish a largely empty council estate on the 4.7 hectare site.
The new estate will be a mixture of terraced, detached and semi-detached properties, with three to five bedrooms.
Taylor Woodrow has decided not to provide a play area on the estate, but will pay a commuted sum of £38,100 - equivalent to £300 per new house - to go towards the council's Play Area Strategy for play area provision across the district.
