A CRICKET ball has rebounded back to its spiritual home in East Cleveland after almost 100 years.
Dave Beach, scorer at Marske Cricket Club, heard that the ball was due to be auctioned in Harrogate, when a man from Bradford who was bidding for a rugby cap telephoned to say it was up for sale.
The club was eager to get the ball back and put in a successful bid of £60.
It now takes pride of place in the trophy cabinet at the club's Summershill Lane ground.
Members are delighted that the "cherry" is back at its rightful home, but are stumped on the history of the ball. They are appealing for anyone with information to contact the club.
The ball has a silver medallion attached to it, inscribed "Marske Cricket Club. Bowling Prize. 1908. J Lucas". The words "Bookless. MCC Middlesbrough" are also clearly stamped on the ball.
Little is known of the club's history from the 1900s and anyone who can shed any light on the ball or any other details about the club is asked to telephone 01642 484361
