PLANS to build a 69-bed residential care home on the site of a redundant petrol station have been approved by councillors.
Members of Gateshead Council's planning and development committee supported the development on a prominent site in the t0wn's Lobley Hill Road.
The proposal, by Hadrian Healthcare, will transform the former Saltwell Park Service Station into a modern three-storey building, close to the Team Valley Trading Estate.
The site is one of a large number of redundant petrol stations in Gateshead.
Last year, in response to an increasing number of complaints about the state of abandoned petrol stations, the council began contacting owners to impress on them the need to keep sites tidy and to establish what their long-term plans were.
