A pensioner has been left in a critical condition after an early morning accident on the outskirts of Durham City.
The 65-year-old woman has undergone emergency surgery in Newcastle General Hospital today following the accident near Sherburn Village.
It is thought the woman was walking in the carriageway of the B1283 when she was hit by a Vauxhall Astra estate car.
The 22-year-old driver and a 17-year-old woman passenger stopped to help the victim, but when they were at the roadside the car was driven off and was later found burnt-out at Wingate, County Durham.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
