POLICE have pledged a tough crackdown on youth disorder in Darlington in the run-up to Bonfire Night.
Darlington Community Safety Partnership says it is determined to cut down misuse of fireworks, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour during Mischief Week, from October 30 to November 6.
Last year, incidents of youths causing annoyance rose from an average of 98 a week to 148 during the week between Halloween and November 5.
In 2002, the average was 79, which increased to 103 in the week before Halloween and 131 in the week before Bonfire Night.
Acting Sergeant Sham Sahani said police would work with the fire and ambulance services, uniformed wardens and trading standards officers to reduce problems in specific areas, including Springfield Park, Yarm Road and the Cockerton West, Harrowgate Hill, Central and Park East wards.
"Historically during that time, there is a major increase in youth disorder, criminal damage and general reported crime," she said. "Our intention is to encourage the general public to report all incidents and to carry out high-visibility patrols to stamp out bad behaviour and criminal activity."
It is now illegal to let fireworks off from 11pm to 7am and for anyone under 18 to be in possession of fireworks in a public place.
Acting Sgt Sahani said officers would be vigorously enforcing the law to deter youths from throwing fireworks. "The distress which misuse of fireworks can cause, never mind the injuries, is huge," she said.
Trading standards officers will visit every outlet selling fireworks in the town to warn retailers not to sell to those under-age.
Acting Sgt Sahani said: "The message is for youths to be sensible. They know what the law is and anybody breaking it could face heavy fines or even custody."
