PLANS for a £500,000 sewer improvement scheme in Hartlepool have been hailed as a victory for people power.
Councillor Pamela Har greaves, chairwoman of Hartlepool Borough Council's environment and regeneration scrutiny forum spoke out following Northumbrian Water's announcement it intends to start work in the Fens area of the town next spring.
The forum has carried out a lengthy investigation into flooding issues in Hartlepool.
Numerous meetings have taken place, often attended by residents whose homes have been flooded by sewage-contaminated water on more than one occasion.
Coun Hargreaves said: "This is an example of scrutiny at its best. Without the input of the residents, we wouldn't have achieved what we have."
The improvement scheme will involve sewer renewal works in Honiton Way, Mardale Avenue and Torquay Avenue, all linking into Seaton Lane.
The work is expected to take about five months.
