THE latest round of grants have been awarded to community organisations and worthy causes in the North-East by a regional charity.
Christ's Hospital, in Sherburn, near Durham, handed out sums totalling £448,339 to a variety of groups across the region.
In addition, grants of about £150,000 are also awarded on an annual basis by the charity to individuals in need who are referred to it by agencies including social services.
The latest round of grant-giving took place at the offices of Ward Hadaway solicitors, at Sandgate House, on the Newcastle Quayside, on Wednesday.
Representatives of 18 recipient organisations were presented with cheques for varying amounts by charity officials.
Christ's Hospital, also known as Sherburn Hospital and Sherburn House Charity, was founded in 1181 and once served as a leper colony.
Apart from its charitable role, the hospital also provides residential care and sheltered accommodation for elderly people.
Its headquarters are at its premises, set in picturesque grounds two miles east of Durham.
