A NORTH-East man is hoping to become the British number one in a new water sport.
Dave Ibbertson, from Darlington, is in second place in the UK kite-surfing championships.
However, he is hoping to win the final competition in Cornwall from November 2 to 7, which would lift him into first place.
Kite-surfing involves being towed on small surf-board behind a kite and the rider can reach speeds of up 47mph and heights of 40ft.
Competitors perform tricks and are judged on the complexity of the routine.
Darlington firefighter Mr Ibbertson said: "I sailed and wind-surfed, so kite-surfing was a natural progression. It can be really spectacular especially when you get some height, but it's also quite cold.
"I've been doing it for four years now and this is only my second season competing.
"I've not done too badly. If I could get the time and opportunity, I would like to compete on the international circuit."
