Darlington MP Alan Milburn went back to school yesterday to present staff and pupils with a prestigious award.
Rise Carr Primary School, on Eldon Street, has successfully picked up a Healthy Schools Award for its commitment to promoting healthy living.
Rise Carr was selected for the accolade by judges from the Darlington and County Durham Healthy School Partnership, after signing up to the national free fruit scheme and encouraging pupils to keep fit.
Headteacher Tony Kemp said the school focuses not only on educating the pupil's minds, but also on improving their emotional well-being and on raising their self-esteem.
Youngsters are also encouraged to take part in after school activities and keep fit by playing games during lunch hours.
Mr Kemp said: "I'm absolutely delighted for all children and staff on receiving this award.
"We place a lot of value on educating the whole child and we believe that every child matters."
