A WILDLIFE reserve will be a lot brighter next spring and summer, thanks to young volunteers.

Woodlands adjoining the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust's North-East site, at Washington, were targeted by countryside rangers yesterday, backed by a team of young green-fingered helpers.

Sunderland City Council's countryside team posed the question: "How many countryside lovers does it take to change a bulb?"

They were given their answer yesterday when 15 youngsters turned up to assist the bulb planting operation.

The bulb planting was the latest event in a programme of outdoor activities and countryside events.

Countryside officer Gillian Flint oversaw the operation, planting hundreds of bulbs in time to flower next year.

Colleague Claire Dewson said: "This was an excellent chance to help to add a splash of colour to one of our local woodlands.

"The volunteers gave us valuable help in planting a wide array of native wildflowers."

Visitors to the trust's reserve will feel the benefit next year.

The wetlands site will be open throughout half-term, from 9.30am to 5.30pm, with last admission at 5pm.

Entry costs £5.75 for adults, £4.75 to over-60s and concessions at £3.75 for children aged four to 16, or £15 for a family ticket for two adults and two children.
