PLANS by a developer to build flats and houses in Bishop Auckland town centre could lead to a run-down listed building being renovated.
A derelict Grade II listed gazebo on the site of a proposed housing development would be restored by builders as part of the scheme at the north end of the town.
MMP Estates Limited wants to build four blocks of flats, convert two properties into flats and build five town houses at North Bondgate.
If the scheme is approved by Wear Valley District Council, the firm will repair the old gazebo as a communal amenity for residents of the flats.
Plans to develop the largely disused land, next to North Bondgate car park, have been welcomed by planning officers.
They said it would extend the existing residential area, known as High Bondgate, to meet housing needs in the district and create "scope to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of listed buildings in the area".
Councillors have already approved plans for a block of 27 flats to the south of the site and the conversion of number four and six High Bondgate.
MMP Estate also wants to build 20 flats and five town houses, in three extra three and four storey blocks around a courtyard.
Councillors will discuss the planning application at a meeting of the development control committee on Thursday.
One neighbour has objected to the scheme, fearing a loss of light and privacy.
The scheme is designed to take into account the potential redevelopment of the public car park and adjacent bus depot.
Regeneration officers at the council hope to find a developer that will flatten the bus depot, which could be relocated to St Helen Auckland, and build a shopping centre in its place.
Traders have been calling for food retailers to be encouraged to move into the town to enhance their own businesses since Asda supermarket left the Newgate Centre, in favour of a purpose built store in South Church Road.
