A MAN whose body was found in a flat had been strangled, police said last night.
The body of Carl Shaw, 26, was discovered on Sunday night in an apartment in Cemetery Road, York.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a post- mortem examination had shown the cause of his death to be strangulation.
He added that Mr Shaw had lived in York.
A 36-year-old man was arrested and was last night still helping police with their inquiries at Fulford police station.
Officers were called to the scene at about 9pm and taped off the area around three apartments while forensic officers combed the building.
Inspector Steve Burns said officers were called to the property, opposite York Cemetery, after an assault.
He refused to say whether a murder investigation had been launched, but confirmed that a 36-year-old man was being held in connection with the assault and death.
He said: "We've had an assault at the property that we are investigating. It's very, very early stages at the moment."
One person living in the flats complex said they had heard loud music and arguments earlier in the night.
Another said paramedics arrived at the building just after 9pm, but left without a body.
The coroner has been informed.
