A man admitted stabbing his first wife while he was out on licence from a life sentence for murdering his second wife.
Kenneth Milroy, 52, was jailed for life in 1995 for strangling his second wife and served nine years before bring released on licence in March.
On 8 August he stabbed his first wife Lynne Bell eight times in her garden in Larchwood Gardens, Gateshead.
Milroy, from York, pleaded guilty to wounding Ms Bell with intent during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.
A charge of attempted murder was dropped after he admitted the lesser charge.
Milroy will be sentenced on 19 November after the preparation of reports. He was remanded in custody.
Milroy strangled his wife Kathleen Milroy, 33, in a late night row after she refused to leave a pub.
In February 1995, a judge at Newcastle Crown Court heard she was enjoying herself so much she wanted to stay.
The couple argued on their way home in Gateshead and it ended with Milroy forcing his wife into a lane and throttling her.
He admitted murder and was jailed for life.
