A SERIES of workshops and interactive displays are shattering the myth that glass art is not cool for kids.

The National Glass Centre, in Sunderland, hopes to encourage youngsters to try their hand at making their own glass art creations in workshops staged throughout the week.

Glass painting, glass mosaic and sandcasting sessions run on different days as part of a packed programme of half-term activities, under the heading Glassweek.

There are also exhibitions, interactive displays, glass blowing demonstrations, all supported by a range of talks and tours.

Alison Atkinson, of the centre, said: "We're basically tailoring the workshops to appeal to children aged from six to 14.

"They can cast their own designs using molten glass, which then goes into the kiln, to be collected the following day.

"Or they can make their own mosaic and glass painting designs which they can take away with them on the day."

Admission to the workshops costs £5, but it is included in the £12 cost of a family ticket.

Sandcasting sessions are today, tomorrow and Friday, from 2pm to 3pm.

Glass mosaic workshops are tomorrow and Friday, from 11am to noon, and glass painting is on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, all from 11am to noon and 2pm to 3pm.

The glass centre, in Liberty Way, Sunderland, is open from 10am to 5pm daily, except for Christmas and on New Year's Day.

Places are limited on the workshops, and should be booked in advance by calling 0191-515 5555.
