ENTREPRENEUR Duncan Bannatyne gave his mother the best possible birthday present yesterday as she watched him collect an OBE from the Queen.
The millionaire businessman's mother, Jean, marked her 79th birthday with a trip to Buckingham Palace for the ceremony.
The chairman of Bannatyne Fitness, which has a string of health clubs across the North-East, was recognised for services to business and charity.
Mr Bannatyne is an active supporter of Unicef, Scottish International Relief and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
As part of his charity work, he has paid for the construction of two orphanages in Romania and Colombia.
He is also renowned in the business world for creating an empire from humble beginnings.
He successfully ran care homes in the region before developing the health club chain. He is also set to open a bar and casino in Newcastle.
Last night, he told of his delight at receiving the OBE as his mother looked on.
He said: "She is in a wheelchair and was treated so well at the palace. She had a great day so I have had a great day."
