SUPPORTERS of the Green Howards are preparing for a fight to save their regiment.
The unit, based in Richmond, North Yorkshire, is facing an uncertain future after the Government announced plans to cut four infantry regiments.
To gather support against the move, retired Major David Nicholson will appeal to North Yorkshire councillors tonight.
He said: "At a time when Britain's soldiers are already overstretched overseas, and when we face an increased threat of terrorism in this country, it is madness to even contemplate cutting infantry regiments.
"We shall know within the next few weeks whether the axe is to fall on the Green Howards.
"If it does, then like any regiment, we will come out fighting to get the decision reversed.
"We are confident that North Yorkshire County Council will be in the forefront of the fight and that all local people will follow their example in striving to save their county regiment."
Maj Nicholson will ask councillors to use their influence with MPs and others to put pressure on the Ministry of Defence to reject the closure plans.
