A scheme to help elderly and vulnerable people in Darlington was launched yesterday.
The Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and social services chiefs celebrated the start of the Good Neighbours project at Rosemary Court.
It will see a range of services provided for more than 50 people in the area.
Volunteers will help with tasks such as shopping, letter writing, dog walking, collecting pensions or attending someone's home when workers visit.
WRVS project manager Rosemary Raine-Howe said: "Even small jobs can sometimes be daunting.
"Help with these can improve people's sense of security and enjoyment of life. For instance, taking someone to a doctor's appointment or just calling in for a chat can make a huge difference."
