A LOLLIPOP lady has criticised motorists for putting children's lives at risk.

For the past 32 years, Heather Rabjohns has helped children cross the road outside Michael Sydall Primary School, in Catterick Village.

But recently, the lollipop lady has become more and more concerned about the behaviour of motorists.

"They are driving past when I'm in the middle of the road - it's very frightening," she said.

"I'm worried a child will run out in front of a car.

"Since September, it's happened three times. Often, they are going too fast for me to get the number.

"If it keeps happening, I'm taking early retirement."

One recent incident involving a female motorist is now in the hands of the police, after the registration plate was recorded.

Catterick district councillor Tony Pelton said road safety in the village needed to be looked at.

"We've been asking for traffic calming schemes for five years," he said. "What we really need is two pelican crossings - one in High Street and the other from Slessor Road to Marne Barracks."

County councillor Carl Les said an imminent traffic management study of Catterick Garrison, Colburn, Catterick Village and Scotton would see a five-year plan of how to improve road safety in the area, drawn up.

Before work starts, residents will be asked to give their thoughts on what measures need to be taken to ensure safety.
