STUDENTS have been given a chance to show off their artistic talents at a North-East museum.

The pupils, from Greenfield School, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, have been working with rock art experts to create their own glass sculptures.

Their work, inspired by prehistoric rock art symbols found at sites in Northumberland, was unveiled at the Museum of Antiquities, in Newcastle, yesterday.

The exhibition, called Written in Stone, is the culmination of seven months' work funded by a £11,250 Heritage Lottery Fund Grant.

Lindsay Allason-Jones, director of Archaeological Museums at Newcastle University, said: "This is a really unusual project which has reaped enormous benefits, both for the schoolchildren and for the museum."

The project has involved the pupils going on field trips to see some of Northumberland's prehistoric rock art, and also exploring their every- day surroundings.
