RESIDENTS in the remote village of Cropton in the North York Moors National Park, have realised their target of £300,000 to redevelop their 19th Century community hall.
Despite having a population of only 208, they have raised the money in four years through grant aid and a chain of events of devices ranging from jam-making and picture painting to making bird boxes and greetings cards.
The one-time Methodist Chapel and village reading room is now being renovated into a community centre.
"This project has been a tremendous community effort," said chairman Vic Worrall. "We have not only raised the money but it has brought the village together and created a marvellous spirit."
Dick and Jean Feaster raised £4,000 by opening the garden of their home, and raised another £6,000 through four auctions.
Residents raised £74,000 through events to add to the £163,000 provided by Defra, the Government's rural affairs and environment ministry, while Ryedale District Council gave £20,000 and North Yorkshire County Council £17,000 with the balance coming from various donations.
