THE launch of North-East police force's recruitment drive for special constables has met with a positive response.

Durham Constabulary is looking to recruit about 25 volunteer specials to work alongside police officers across the county on foot patrol and in crime reduction initiatives.

There are already 91 specials across County Durham and Darlington, who attend crime scenes, help control crowds at sporting events and deal with house-to-house inquiries.

Last week, the force launched the Be Part of Something Special campaign in the search for men and women, aged between 18 and 50, to represent their local communities.

Following 26 weeks of training, specials are given the same powers as regular officers. They must be willing to dedicate at least six hours a week to the role.

Specials will also be involved in the constabulary's StreetSafe campaign, identifying and tackling problems in specific areas and reassuring residents.

Area officer Dave Dean said specials assist in all aspects of public safety.

"A special will gain a lot of valuable knowledge and skills, which can help in their personal life and their career," he said.
